Castillo San Cristóbal Welcomes New Exhibits

Funding for this project was provided by the parks Fee Program

Superintendent Walter J. Chavez announced today that the 3rd and final phase of new exhibits planned for the fortifications of San Juan National Historic Site will be available for park visitors beginning August 14th, 2015.

“We are very pleased to complete this final installation of new exhibits at the Visitor Center at Castillo San Cristobal” shared, Superintendent Walter J. Chavez.

“Last year the 2nd phase was installed in the fortification of San Cristobal and the first phase was completed at Castillo San Felipe del Morro the previous year. This final phase will complete the one million dollar project to upgrade exhibits throughout the fortifications, enhancing our visitors experience to the park” added, Superintendent Chavez.

Funding for this project was provided by the parks Fee Program, which comes directly from the entrance fees received.

In addition to the new exhibits, some slight modifications have been made to the visitor Center area at San Cristobal, to improve visitor flow and to give visitors a unique opportunity to become familiar with and learn about the fortifications before they enter San Cristobal. These changes to the Visitor Center and parking lot will improve safety and enhance the visitor experience.

In the future, as the park celebrates the National Park Service Centennial in 2016, the park will be developing a new film for visitors. This new film, along with several projects and programs will be a part of our Centennial Celebration as we commemorate 100 years of the National Park Service.

“I encourage you to come and experience these new exhibits and spend some time with us as we celebrate our Centennial here at San Juan National Historic Site and throughout the National Park System”, concluded Chavez.
