Popular: Joins the reforestation movement with 20,000 trees

Concerned about the environment, especially after the deforestation caused by hurricanes Irma and María in 2017, Popular is committed to planting 20,000 native trees, contributing to the Para la Naturaleza Reforestation program.

Most of the plantings will take place in the Pitahaya protected natural area and in the La Parguera nature reserve in Lajas. This contribution will allow Para la Naturaleza to get closer to its goal of producing and planting 100,000 native trees annually with the help of volunteers and companies committed to the environment.

Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, a Puerto Rican company with 128 years of service in Puerto Rico, has evolved over time by locating branches in the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America. The institution was founded with the objective of serving the neediest communities. Environmental protection and sustainability have been part of the bank’s commitment.

Since 2007, Popular began integrating eco-friendly branches and since then, all new or remodeled branches have included fluorescent lighting, passive solar lamps, high efficiency air conditioning duct materials, among other things.

As part of its program, Popular encourages employee participation in volunteerism. Recently, a group of Popular employees teamed up with Para la Naturaleza to plant 1,000 native trees in the Pitahaya protected natural area in Canóvanas.
